![]() RED SUNSET is one of the best red maple cultivars available in commerce, with outstanding orange to red fall color (quality more reliable than species). Specific epithet of rubrum meaning red is everywhere in evidence: red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April (before the leaves appear), red fruit (initially reddish, two-winged samara), reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, excellent orange-red foliage color. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Flowers on a given tree are primarily male or female or monoecious and appear in late winter to early spring (March-April) before the leaves. Leaves are medium to dark green above and gray green below. Lobes have toothed margins and pointed tips. Leaves (to 2-5" long) have 3 principal triangular lobes (sometimes 5 lobes with the two lower lobes being largely suppressed). Quality of red fall color on species plants is variable. This tree is a show stopper, and it will have the neighbors wishing they had one in. From there, they can sit balled and burlapped out of the ground all year, as long as they are on drip irrigation (which ours are!). This large deciduous tree has a pyramidal form when young that becomes rounded with age. Autumn Blaze maple, with vibrant fall foliage. Compared to Autumn Blaze, Red Sunset maple requires more frequent watering. While the Autumn Blaze maple needs a maximum pH of 6.5, the Red Sunset maple needs a maximum pH of 7.0. Is often the first to color up in the autumn. Red Sunset Red Maple prefers to be spring dug- so we dig them out of the ground in March or April depending on the weather. Considered one of the best for early fall color The glossy green leaves provide a very dynamic show, as they turn a brilliant orange-scarlet when temperatures begin to cool. All trees can be dug out of the field in the spring, before they leaf out and, in addition, some trees can also be dug in the fall after their leaves have dropped. All of our trees are balled and burlapped- which means we dig the tree, much of its root system, and surrounding soil and then wrap it in burlap and put it in a metal basket- at that time it is ready to be transported and transplanted.
